11 Best Character Design Websites Every Character Creator Needs

character design references

Professional illustrators and concept artists are experts at pushing their art to a higher level and finding exciting new ways to approach classic subjects. Depending on what type of character the artist will be designing, they need to do a lot of research on the real thing before even starting to sketch. Whether it’s a hedgehog, a sphynx cat, or an eagle, you could try watching a documentary on the animal, read some information about it, and utilize Google for images. The process of designing a character is creating the concept and style of that character from scratch. No matter if you’re creating a cartoon character or an entire concept design for game characters, the process takes a lot of work and creativity and requires years of studies and practice to perfect. Even though there isn’t a right way to design a character, there are a few steps in the process that most artists go through when they create their concepts.

How To Draw Simple Cartoon Hands: Guide With References and Examples

There is, of course, just the fun of playing with character editing and features and seeing what you can develop. It can be quite addicting playing with all of the available parts and seeing what new characters may develop in the process. As has always been the case throughout art history, one of the best places to start is yourself.

If you’re like us, quite a few of these characters are recognizable from their silhouette. Sure, many of these characters are iconic, but they became iconic because of good, clear character design. Some of the most memorable characters in television and film come from the world of 2D and 3D animation. For these reasons, reference checks show only a small correlation with employee performance in their new job.

About the Library

Your imagination, after all, comes from your mind, and your mind is informed by your real world knowledge and experiences. It is often up to the illustrator to interpret the brief, ask the right questions, read between the lines, and distill the client’s explanation into core character traits. Your ideas should not contradict the brief, of course, but keep in mind that you were hired for your expertise. In many cases, the client will be expecting you to expand on the concept in novel ways that will not have occurred to them.

Awesome Resources

He covers all the usual features of the body, including the bones, muscles, bony landmarks, and soft tissues that contribute to the human form, all in an accessible style that is easily applied to your own work. Do You love making characters?

For example, you may look for “hands”, then “right hand,” “right-hand fist.” By composing a collection of images, you may inadvertently create a basic mood board for what you want from your drawing. Here is a collection of tips from comic book artist Marcio Takara (@marciotakara) that will help you find visual references and provide the basic foundations for your next illustration. In step-by-step tutorials, eleven artists reveal how they create exclusive homages inspired by their favourite elements of Frazetta’s work and style.

Digitize the sketch

It is in response to this dilemma that our meticulously curated library emerges as a beacon of convenience and inspiration. Studying the work of other artists can be an incredibly useful tool to help you in the further development of your artistic skills. Character Design References (CDR) is an online platform that celebrates and showcases exceptional character-focused art within the realms of animation, illustration, games, and comics.

One option instead is to suggest a distant, out-of-focus background with roughly painted shapes behind the character. But most artists opt for a fairly simple background, often in a neutral greyish tone with a subtle color gradient or texture. The colors you choose can further enhance the intended mood of the character. Adding a floor shadow as well is a simple way to ground your character in space and reinforce the lighting.

Doing so not only gives the client options, it creates the sense that this character is alive rather than a doll pinned down to a static pose. Another of our Top Level character artists, BayuRIP, uses this phase to push the concept to new heights, “Combine some elements into the character, make it weird and unique. Try to explore shape and angle to make it different and add your personal style to the design”. You can find reference material from virtually any source—Pinterest, Google images, ArtStation, Dribbble, even your own camera roll. You can also gather reference images for anything you’re unsure about—from the character concept as a whole to specific details like clothing, hairstyle, facial expression, poses and more.

If you are working on a team or with a client, this can be a good time to gather feedback before going any further—in which case, you may want to provide a few (no more than three) options. The purpose of this sketch is to guide your final artwork, so it is going to get harder to make any big changes to the design from here on. Cross The Lime summarizes, “It is even more important that you keep a clear silhouette in mind when designing. Have ears, head shape, position of arms clearly defined, so that you can recognize the character even when it is just the silhouette.” If you have not done so, it’s a good idea to brush up on shape language. This, (in addition to color later on) is a primary visual way to communicate traits and emotions such as stability, danger, or innocence.

Otherwise, most cartoonish styles tend to keep the hard edges for their colors and shading. To get an idea of how all this is done, search for and study process videos from other character artists on YouTube. Because of the variety of videos offered on the channel that go beyond character design, Winged Canvas is a video resource that will surprise you with how much is offered. Watching their general technique videos, those not specifically about character design can help improve your art overall.

You can always doodle your concepts and seek the assistance of an artist for the technical part. We hope you enjoyed diving into the basics of the character design process and the lovely examples by talented illustrators. On the topic, in case you’re looking for a character designer, here are your options, listed and explained in another article.

The lines also add to the personality and have a unique quality to describe the character’s attitude. Softer, even and round lines make a character more approachable, childish, and cute, while sharp uneven lines unveil a more uneasy personality. Lines also play a huge role in how the character is perceived by the audience in terms of appeal. You have also noticed that most famous characters, especially in cartoons almost never have realistic proportions.

We recommend you immerse yourself in the elements of art and acquaint yourself intimately with the interplay of color, shape, line, texture, and form, possibly under the guidance of a professional mentor. By doing so, you will allow the principles of design to shape your artistic sensibilities. Combine your creativity with the power of daily practice and the ardent pursuit of live and gesture drawing, as these exercises forge a profound connection between your hand, eye, and imagination. If you are going for a more painterly style, you can blend these tones by using a brush with a lowered opacity and sampling new grey tones periodically using the eyedropper tool.

The details of a character’s personality often inform character designers on the visual attributes of a character. Principles such as color theory, shape language, and even general psychology all help an artist create an effective character design. In visual arts, character design is the full creation of a character’s aesthetic, personality, behavior, and overall visual appearance. This means that every aspect of a character such as shapes, color palettes, and details are chosen for a specific reason. ArtStation does provide some learning materials, but the best use of it is simply to discover great artists to study and references as you develop your style. There are incredible character designers who put up their portfolios that are well worth studying.

Usually, artists exaggerate features in order to give more personality to a character. This is something that creators usually do for more masculine characters since the upper body strength is a symbol of that masculinity and exaggerating it makes it more distinctive. We all love those complex beautiful armors on fantasy characters in RPGs, however, these rich designs often take away the attention from the character and bring it to the armors and weapons instead. It’s important to keep in mind the concept of color psychology and the emotions that color communicates as a tool of conversion. Dynamic characters require more energetic and joyful colors such as orange, while more collected or dark and mysterious characters usually sport neutral and royal colors such as black and purple. Therefore, it would be natural for it to wear the brand or product colors, or to complement those colors well.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

how much is a cruise ship

The idea of retiring from the rat race and living out your days on a cruise has great appeal for some people. Royal Caribbean tends to only amplify its ships built after 2000. Norwegian Cruise Line, however, has refurbished ships that were built in the 1990s. The 18-deck, 8,454-passenger ship was the second vessel in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class series. The ship is chock-full of amusements — multiple dining and drinking venues, a zip line, the FlowRider surf simulator, an ice skating rink and an AquaTheater.

It’s been reported that around 7% of a cruise line’s revenue goes into ship maintenance. That averages out at around $19 million a year per cruise ship, although that figure fluctuates as cruise ships will do larger refurbishments every three to five years. There’s a high likelihood that she will become the most expensive ship ever built – after all, she will be the biggest by some distance. But many of her features are attractions that already exist on the Oasis-class and Quantum-class ships, which will help lower some costs. There is a wide range of construction costs for Carnival Cruise ships. For example, at the low end is the Carnival Celebration at a mere $130 million.

Running Costs Of Cruise Ships

You’ve got your accommodation, transport to each port, and meals sorted. To work out the real costs, however, you’ll need to dig a little deeper to figure out what else you’re getting for your money and what needs to be paid for on top of the base fare. Using this metric, with a total cruise fare of $99,766, the average couple would spend $72,829 onboard during the course of the year. However, it's likely that the figure would be drastically lower as average spending on the ship will likely be less if staying full-time versus splurging for a short vacation. On average, modern cruise ships cost between $500 million to over $900 million to build.

#25 - MSC Virtuosa Cost to Build

The ship measures 185k gross tons and is one of the largest in the fleet. If we look at the Costa Smeralda cruise ship cost per tonnage, we get a price tag showing $5,135 per GT. If we look at the Quantum of the Seas cruise ship cost per tonnage, we get a price tag showing $5,632 per GT. If we look at the MV Iona cruise ship cost per tonnage, we get a price tag showing $5,163 per GT. The ship measures 136k gross tons and is one of the largest in the fleet. If we look at the Costa Firenze cruise ship cost per tonnage, we get a price tag showing $7,011 per GT.

This involves an intricate process of building the ship in blocks which are later added together (think Legos!). Wonder of the Seas, the line's newest ship, is the second-most-expensive ship at a construction cost of approximately $1.35 billion. Built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Naizaire, France, the 6,988-passenger vessel, which debuted in 2022, currently holds the title of the world's largest ship. As you can imagine, it also holds a dizzying array of diversions. Additionally, it's the first Oasis Class ship to feature a dedicated neighborhood of exclusive amenities for suite guests.

It's also interesting to look at the Ovation of the Seas cost per cabin. Some quick math shows that Royal Caribbean paid roughly $574k per cabin for this ship. It's also interesting to look at the MSC Seashore cost per cabin.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

On the other hand, with a guarantee fare, there's always a chance that the category you've booked will be sold out, and you'll actually be upgraded at no additional cost to you. As well, remember that what you spend will vary widely based on any number of factors, including your own budgeting for the trip and how much you let loose on your vacation. Keep in mind that these are just estimates, per person. Getting to the Ship/Parking/Hotel (Varies)The amount that it will cost you to get to the ship, park, and/or a hotel stay will vary based on your needs. With more newer ships priced at a premium and a push to shore up balance sheets, longer term pricing seems likely to rise.

MSC Grandiosa

Royal Caribbean really pulled out all the stops with Harmony of the Seas, as this liner was designed with 2,747 cabins, a Starbucks café, and robot bartenders. You don’t need to spend a cent more if you don’t want to or you or you can pick and choose the extras that are important to you. If you’re a big souvenir shopper, you’ll want to factor in some additional cash into your cruise budgeting.

Given that most large cruise ships cost upwards of one billion dollars, cruise lines try to find the most cost effective option. Some lines have sales that remove the supplements on specific sailings; luxury lines like Seabourn and Silversea frequently offer single supplements as low as 10 to 25% of the fare. Many new big cruise ships have dedicated solo cabins. The best known are Norwegian Cruise Line's studio cabins. P&O Cruises' Britannia has single balcony cabins, a first for the line. Other lines with a small number of solo cabins on select ships include Royal Caribbean, Cunard and Holland America Line.

Fees are also higher on larger ships because the cruise line is charged docking space based on size. Fees are lowest when ships tender rather than dock. Cruise fares can be as cheap as $179 for a four-night Carnival cruise or as expensive as $11,000 per night for the top Regent Suite on Regent Seven Seas Cruises' newest ships. In fact, onboard spending is the area where you have the most control over what you’ll spend.

Cruise ships are pretty impressive – even the smaller ones are stunning, epic works of engineering genius. And they’re hardly empty shells – they’re packed with cabins, restaurants, places to relax and things to do. My business partner and I were looking to purchase a retail shopping center in southern California. We sought out the services of Ronny, CFO of Assets America. Ronny found us several commercial properties which met our desired needs.

Celebrity allows you to bring two bottles of wine onboard per cabin. We drank those in our cabin to avoid the corkage fee (you can ask your cabin attendant for a bottle opener and two glasses). Celebrity offers free drinks in the casino while gambling, so my extra drink cost was zero. Most cruise lines give you the opportunity to pay crew tips at the time of booking.

As I said above, Royal Caribbean Group made around $1.8 billion in profit in 2019, the year before the global pause. A cruise ship will usually generate around $200 million to $300 million in revenue every year. The amount of profit that a cruise ship makes every year will vary but it’s usually between $20 and $40 million annually. In years since the global shutdown of 2020, many cruise lines have lost money rather than being profitable, but year-on-year things are improving again. Regent spent $125 million to upgrade the Seven Seas Navigator, Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner from 2016-to 2017, following the launch of the Seven Seas Explorer.

Every cruise company needs to make money, and building ships is expensive. Therefore, they need to ensure a good return on investment. Each ship has onboard suites and cabins for guests, plus crew cabins, restaurants, bars, swimming pools, stages, theaters, cinemas, and sun decks. Each feature must be made off-site and then later fitted into the structure over an established time. With attractions and size, Oasis-class ships don’t just cost millions to construct – they are in the billions. Harmony of the Seas was $119,900/berth to construct whereas Symphony of the Seas was $196,000/berth.

Each cruise line makes rewarding the excellent service you’ll receive onboard easy. A gratuity of $16-$19 per day (depending on the cruise line and cabin category), per guest for dining and stateroom services will be automatically added daily to your shipboard account. The cruise line also will automatically add an 18% service charge to beverages purchased through your onboard account. Before the end of the cruise, the Cruise Director will address more specific questions regarding tipping procedures. Spending some time contacting your cell phone carrier before your trip will help ensure you can call friends and family back home and eliminate any surprises on your phone bill when you return. Let your phone carrier know your travel plans, including how you plan to use your phone on your cruise.

They were the youngest of the Fantasy class, both launching in 1998. Built in 1996 by Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Helsinki, Finland, Carnival Inspiration cost $270 million to build. After being christened by Mary A. Shula, wife of a prior Miami Dolphins coach, the ship set sail and traveled through the Caribbean and then to the West Coast, with initial sailings from Puerto Rico. Here’s a glimpse of Carnival Inspiration’s life and what it looked like at the time of retirement. A former member of Carnival’s Fantasy class, Carnival Inspiration was originally christened in 1996, meaning that, if it were still sailing today, the ship would be a whopping near-30 years old.

Classic family-friendly activities were plentiful, such as with the Seuss at Sea program, and family-friendly fun at the sports courts, such as with the mini golf course. An internet café was also available, as was an art gallery and 24-hour arcade. For example, Carnival Inspiration was the very first cruise ship to receive an Evolutions of Fun makeover, in 2007. The Evolutions of Fun initiative refit quite a few Carnival ships and lasted through 2010, costing about $250 million total. In July 2020, Carnival Cruise Lines sold several ships from its fleet, including Carnival Inspiration.

Carnival Inspiration did have balcony rooms, but unfortunately, only suites offered balconies. Immerse yourself in stunning landscapes, embrace a rich culture and experience the warmth of God’s love. The views are just as incredible with soaring windows overlooking the impossibly blue Gastineau Channel.

We also suggest keeping your essential toiletries and a one-day change of clothes in your carry-on. Do not pack your passport or travel documents in your luggage. It is suggested that you keep a color copy of the information page of your passport inside your luggage if your passport is lost. Along with Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Inspiration headed for the scrapyard. Staterooms were distinctly red, orange and beige, with lots of warm woods and a budget hotel vibe. Even the nicer, larger suites, such as a junior suite or grand suite, did not offer an updated décor scheme or any large degree of luxury.

For the kiddos, Camp Carnival provided programming for the youngest cruisers, while Circle C provided programming geared toward pre-teens and Club 02 catered to the teenagers in your crew. There was also a specialty coffee bar, Cafe des Artistes, aboard the ship, and Cherry on Top, selling candies and similar sweets. All of the restaurants aboard this ship were complimentary, with no specialty dining options. While this did mean fewer overall options, it was likely nice knowing that you could eat wherever you wanted on the ship and never pay extra.

However, as of 2020, this ship has been retired, sold and sent off to the scrap yard. "The service provided by Inspiration was TOP-NOTCH. We never had a thing to worry about! Keeping with the times, Carnival Magic features the delicious good times of Guy's Burger Joint™, BlueIguana Cantina™, Alchemy Bar® and RedFrog Rum Bar®. Carnival allows you to choose whether you want your room serviced in the morning, in the evening or both. Depending on your steward, you'll come back to a charming array of towel animals. We found our steward friendly and adaptable to our needs, bringing us ice without asking. The bathrooms are nothing special, with most offering showers only -- and featuring those cheap, clingy curtains that seem to have a mind of their own.

Balcony (8F)

If you are looking for privacy, Carnival Magic has 110 Cove Balcony staterooms on Deck 2 located under the lifeboats, so other passengers can't see the balconies from public spaces or from balconies higher up. The cabins in this category are cheaper than a regular balcony cabin and are a good choice for those who like privacy and who don't mind some sea spray. Conversely, balcony cabins on Deck 6 will be directly above the promenade deck and will hear noise from the bars at night and restaurant venues during the day. The 1,845 Carnival Magic cabins and suites are similar to the wide array of accommodations on the Carnival Dream. Families love the two-bathroom/five-berth cabins and the connecting staterooms. Carnival has continued the cove balcony cabins on deck 2 that have cozy balconies closer to the water line and the spa cabins that provide special access and benefits.

Both offer delicious — albeit a little sloppy — eats in relaxed atmospheres. For tacos, head to BlueIguana Cantina; pizza is served up at Pizzeria del Capitano; and hot dogs are up for grabs at the cart by the mini golf course. The design leaves a little to be desired, as it does harken back to that older era of cruising.

Guest Services and the Shore Excursion deck are located on Deck 3, inside an atrium that marks longtime Carnival ship interior designer Joe Farcus' last commission for the line. So there's a heaping dose of neon, mirrored surfaces and other elements that are a cross between glam and wackadoodle (we didn't know whether to admire or fear the eyeball-ish orbs all around). Elsewhere in the ship, though, the decor is relatively tame and tropical; we particularly liked the quirky prints in the stairwells. If you don't want to get off the ship on port days, you'll still find trivia and other activities on non-sea days. We particularly enjoyed the extensive array of themed sessions such as Harry Potter and Dr. Seuss.

When the cool ocean breeze hits your nose with the sweet smell of smoke, you know you better follow it to Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse. At this onboard, open-air spot, Guy's doin’ his authentic, real-deal barbecue, his way. Throw in his signature line of barbecue sauces and you’ve got a rockin’ sea day on deck.

Balcony (8B)

A magically blissful adults-only area that's available to guests 21 years of age and older; it features everything necessary to create the perfect "me-time" moments. The lifeboat configuration of Carnival Magic differs from that of her sister ship, Carnival Dream, in that Carnival Magic has 18 double-size lifeboats, while Carnival Dream has 30 smaller boats. Carnival Magic also has a large, highly visible SkyCourse ropes course forward of her funnel that is not present on her sister. Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ – Guy Fieri brings real-deal barbecue to the open seas! The champion chef and barbecue hall of famer has worked his magic once again.

For those who like laughter with their food, is the Punchliner Comedy Brunch, taking place in the Spotlight Lounge only on sea days. The real foodies who are curious about how the galley feeds so many people, have to check out Chef's Table. For US$75 per person, you'll be able to meet the head chef and tour the galley, as well as dine on a multi-course meal at a private table, while watching the chefs at work. Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck.

At the buffet, you can find a wealth of international and American options, with something for everyone, really. All the reasons you need if you're thinking about a cruise on Carnival Magic, covering the best onboard features of the Carnival cruise ship. Two inviting and well-designed teen clubs for ages 12 to 14 and ages 15 to 17 are located side by side on Deck 4; both are generally open from 5 p.m. Cloud 9 includes a salon with traditional and exotic manicures , shaves and waxing, plus hair styling and coloring. For fun, try some fake lashes; the spa says they'll last two months. Spa treatments for couples are also available and if you're feeling particularly flush, go for the "villa" treatments, which have special suites with whirlpool baths for two.

Guests have told us we hit on something special with the cool Caribbean chill of the RedFrog Pub. We've taken the best parts and brought them poolside with the RedFrog Rum Bar, where the frog keeps the fun hopping day and night with all the island flava you know and love. Join the party at this poolside bar featuring a great selection of frog-approved Caribbean rum-based concoctions available by the glass or pitcher, plus plenty of Carnival’s signature private-label draft beer, ThirstyFrog Red. However you like yours served — whether it’s on a roll or a platter — Seafood Shack’s the place to cast your net.

Carnival has brewed its first private-label draught beer especially for the Carnival Magic, called Thirsty Frog Red. As you might expect, Thirsty Frog Red is red in color and has a very slight fruity taste. During drydock 2021, the ship's Casino was expanded (with a greater variety of slots and other games), also were refreshed the WaterWorks aquapark and Lido Deck's swimming pools.

We went looking for someone to help us grill up the best burgers at sea, and we found just the guy. Try a fresh-off-the-grill burger Guy’s way, or take it off-road to our toppings bar and truly make it your own.
